报告摘要:
Since the first demonstration in 1994, quantum-cascade lasers (QCLs), a type of nanoscale semiconductor lasers, have become one of the most important solid-state mid-infrared (MIR) coherent light sources for various applications in environment sensing, medical diagnosis, and defense and free-space communication. The dynamics analysis and stable pulse progression of MIR QCLs are crucial for QCLs to have reliable performance in these applications. An explicit description of dynamics of QCLs is inevitably complicated when compared to conventional lasers due to the unique combination of ultrafast carrier scatterings and gain recovery, giant nonlinearities and dispersion effects in a QCL medium.
In this talk, we will present a comprehensive modeling strategy for dynamic behaviors in MIR QCLs. The model is built based on the Maxwell-Bloch formulism accounting for all the aforementioned physical phenomena in a typical QCL medium. The QCL pulse evolution is numerically simulated by the finite difference method with prior nondimensionalization treatment, which is necessary for the convergence of solutions. Results obtained bring insights into the individual effect from each physical phenomenon on the QCL pulse progression as well as the interplay among various phenomena. In addition, we investigated the influence of cavity configurations on QCL dynamic behaviors by applying the model on two most important types of QCL cavities, i.e., the ring cavity and the Fabry-Perot cavity. Outcomes from this research could provide design guidance on the lasing pulse shortening and spectrum bandwidth control of MIR QCLs for various applications.

报告人简介:
白静博士系美国明尼苏达大学德卢斯(Duluth)分校电气工程系副教授与研究生部主任。于2007年在美国佐治亚理工学院电子与计算机工程系取得博士学位之后即赴明大工作。在此之前,于2003年取得佐治亚理工学院电子与计算机工程硕士学位,1999年在新加坡南洋理工大学取得机械工程硕士学位,1996年在清华大学取得机械工程本科学位。1999年至2001年,南洋理工大学微米技术中心任研究员。白静教授目前的研究主攻方向包括纳米光电子和太阳能器件,非线性光学,生物医学工程,以及微机电系统器件。研究领域涉及基础科学和应用,研究曾获得包括美国国家自然科学基金和明尼苏达大学研究院等多个部门的基金支持,并发表了50多篇国际顶级期刊杂志及会议论文。2012年获得学校工程科学学院优秀教师奖。白静教授曾多次担任美国和瑞士自然科学研究基金申请审阅人,多个国际会议组委会成员及负责人以及多家国际著名期刊杂志审稿人,为美国光学学会,美国物理学会,美国电气和电子工程师学会,国际光学及光电子学会会员。
